i wouldn't say these inspired my works, but they are certainly movies I have watched and liked. and i've based some of my works on the visuals.
Bad Boys: a 1961 film about bad boys, following the acts and consequences of one particular boy.i heard a large chunk of the scenes were 'on the moment', and you can tell by some of the mannerisms of the boys in the juvie. they scoff at everyone around them, the salarymen, the women, the kids who act their age. it's both a documentary and a fictional film, in that sense.
The Lego Ninjago Movie: the green ninja and his crew have to save the city from lord garmadon, along with their own internal issues. what do you want me to say, it was very moving. it was real funny, all of the lego movies are but this one was especially funny. i really do love this take on the lego ninjago series, and i like how the relationship between the green ninja and lord garmadon, or i should say lloyd and his father, evolved. i feel a bit silly writing a serious review about a kids movie but well...whatever.
Memories of Matsuko: a man's aunt died, and he finds out how complex her life was before she passed away. i watched this with my friends and it made me ugly cry. one of the interesting things about this movie is the actual scenes, how some are bright and comical even in the most depressing moments of her life, and how musical elements are used to transition from arc to arc. the most frustrating thing about the movie in my opinion is the fact that you know she is dead. the entire movie you wish there was some interaction between the aunt and him, but you know that is not possible. however that is how it's supposed to be.
Conclave: the pope had passes away, and the vatician figures out who the next pope will be. the most reccent movie i've seen here, it came out in 2024 and i watched it with my parents. i normally stray from religious movies, other than the main ones like 'the da vinci code' and 'angels and demons', but something about this movie was different. in fact, i never knew how the transition of popes worked, and sure i assumed there were inner-politics in the vatician but i never really thought about it. the movie had some of the best scenes composition-wise, music wise, and character wise. the end was a shock though.
Taxi Driver: a taxi driver in the seedy parts of new york deals with the life he has, along with his relations with others. it's a good movie, a great one if i have to say. many lines that robert de niro's character says are classics, stuff that could be in an old book. in fact, two of my works in year1 is based of one of the lines in the movie. i will say though, i have only watched the movie twice - once by myself, once to show another person. i personally don't think it's a movie you can rewatch regularly. also, the wizard's spiel was fun.
YuYu Hakusho: All or Nothing: the backstory on how hiei and kurama first met. i like YYH, and i espeically like hiei's character. YYH was not the first anime i had ever watched, but it was probably one of the best. both hiei and kurama are interesting characters, and even if the ending for the main series was rushed, their backstories were amazing. especially hiei's, something about being rejected by his kind just for the actions of another, to build up resentment and hatered just for it to simmer out once he finds his people again, it's beautiful. this wasn't much about the movie, was it? i still recommend it though.
Eighth Grade: an eighth grade girl deals with anxiety and loneliness in her last weeks of eighth grade. this also made me ugly cry. as realistic as this is...it's too realistic!!! i appreciate the realness of the characters, how they use phrases and terms - no matter how vulgar - that eighth graders would use. the interaction between her father and her during the first memory capsule seen made my heart ache. my eighth grade of course was somewhat ruined due to covid, but many of the feelings she felt i felt in my own life at that time.
City of Life and Death: a retelling of the rape of nanking. i watched this movie on youtube in the middle of study hall my junior year of high school. i almost threw up in the bathroom, this really shook me to my core. but it was realistic, and reminds people of the real horrors that happened in nanking. this movie is also know as Naking! Nanking!, but i feel like the official title is truely the core of the movie. i recommend, but if you are sensitive to the topics covered in the rape of nanking then i wouldn't advise to watch it.
